Privilege Tools

Here are two similar tools to teach about privilege in society.  These tools come from a Euro-dominant context, namely the United States and Australia.  Different societies and locations might require careful thinking and reworking the list of topics included in the listing for the Step Forward/Step Back tool.

Step Forward/Step Back involves asking people in a line to move forward or back in response to various statements reflecting what makes up privilege in a particular context.  Click here for the Training for Change facilitation instructions for the tool, called “Power Shuffle.”

A similar tool used in a classroom with students in rows is very simple without the specific content of each statement in Step Forward/Step Back.  The tool is for students to throw a wadded up piece of paper into a wastebasket from wherever they may be sitting:
